IFS Commences New Chapter in Supporting Students with Distinguished Opening Ceremony

[Singapore, November 23, 2023] – The International French School (IFS) reached a pivotal moment in its commitment to student welfare and holistic development with the official inauguration of the IFS Counselling Centre today. Her Excellency Ambassador of France to Singapore Minh-di Tang graced the occasion, emphasising the significance of mental health support in nurturing young minds. The ceremony, attended by esteemed guests and members of the school community, marked a momentous milestone in IFS’s dedication to providing comprehensive support to its students.

“The IFS Counseling Center aims to complement the safe and nurturing environment already provided to the students of this school, enabling them to succeed not only academically but also ensuring that all conditions for their personal growth are met,” said  Her Excellency Ambassador Minh-di Tang.

The opening ceremony held at the Counselling Centre’s location was a moment of pride for the International French School in Singapore. The Ambassador’s presence underscored the importance of mental health and well-being in French education, affirming the school’s commitment to fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for its students. Alongside Her Excellency, the ceremony saw the participation of IFS Principal David Binan and the IFS President of the School Board, Jean-Marc Deromedi, both of whom delivered insightful speeches highlighting the pivotal role of the Counselling Centre in supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.

The Counselling Centre is a dedicated and personalised resource designed to nurture our secondary students’ social, emotional, and mental well-being. Committed to providing a confidential and collaborative environment, the IFS Counselling Centre is poised to become an essential pillar in our school community.

Our Counseling Centre and the new counselling team aim to provide a safe and supportive environment where students can explore their emotions, develop coping mechanisms and cultivate self-awareness. Through compassionate guidance, positive regard, and personalised care, we strive to empower students to overcome challenges, build resilience, and foster personal growth, ultimately helping them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally,” said Jean-Marc Deromedi, President of the school Board at the International French School (Singapore).

The IFS Counselling Centre’s approach is rooted in empathy, understanding, and active listening. Skilled counsellors conduct individual and group sessions tailored to each student’s unique needs, whether they have been identified or have voluntarily sought assistance. In addition to providing responsive support, the Centre is committed to promoting mental health and well-being through preventive and awareness-building initiatives, equipping students with proactive tools for managing their mental health.

Here at IFS, we are deeply committed to nurturing not only the academic excellence of our students but also their social and emotional well-being. Our holistic approach, which includes the newly established IFS Counselling Centre, ensures that our students receive the support they need to thrive academically, develop meaningful relationships, and become emotionally resilient individuals, all essential qualities for their success today and in the future,” explained Mr David Binan, Principal, International French School (Singapore).

Recognising that a student’s development is multifaceted, the IFS counselling team emphasises collaboration with parents and educators to ensure a comprehensive support system. Together, they work towards helping students navigate the challenges of adolescence and prepare for a bright future.

The IFS Counselling Centre plays an integral role in creating a nurturing and supportive educational experience, equipping students with essential life skills,” added Mr Deromedi.

School counsellors and psychologists play a crucial role in elevating student well-being and success. They provide emotional support, personalised guidance, and social skill enhancement to empower students to manage challenges effectively. Through empathetic listening and evidence-based strategies, they foster positive mental health. These professionals collaborate closely with educators, parents, and administrators to advocate for students’ needs, ensuring a comprehensive support network that aligns with the school’s mission.

The International French School (Singapore) is excited to embark on this journey of holistic student development with the launch of the IFS Counselling Centre. Together, we will nurture minds and foster resilience, ensuring that our students have the support they need to flourish in their academic journey and beyond.
